nuance & GLP-1s, salted PBJ rice krispie treats, and a new greens powder I'm loving
The Sunday EDIT | No. 25
Happy Valentine’s Week 💗
Yes, I know there’s a big football game this evening and technically Valentine’s Day isn’t until Friday — but I think we could all use more love in our lives right now, so we’re celebrating starting today.
I spent way too much time turning our artwork from earlier into a garland and decorating for when Leena gets up in the morning. It brings me just as much joy as it does her (if not more). I’ll put a little something out each morning through Friday for her to discover.
In this week’s EDIT you’ll find —
Valentine’s Day Recipes
Nuance, GLP-1s & Weight Loss
This & That, including a new greens powder I’m loving and how to still drink coffee while also loving up your adrenals.
Valentine’s Treats
We eat chocolate regularly, so I’m most excited about making the rice krispie treats — I’ll likely swap in almond butter and pack up some as a treat for Leena’s teachers & her ballet friends.
The Need for Nuance with GLP-1s for Weight Loss
I came across this post about GLP-1s from Dr. Robin Berzin, the founder of Parsley Health and it really resonated with me, so I wanted to share it with you all. With these medications being so widely discussed, I think it's important to have a nuanced conversation about them.
She talks about a patient who came to her requesting a GLP-1 medication (like Ozempic or Wegovy) for weight gain in menopause. And guess what? She said no.
Here's the thing: She was already a pretty healthy eater, meaning she didn't need a ton of help with cravings or portion control. She also needed to focus on building lean muscle mass, which is something GLP-1s don't specifically target (they can actually lead to muscle loss, which isn't ideal). And finally, there was room for optimization with her hormone replacement therapy (HRT) before adding another medication into the mix.
I see a similar pattern with many of my clients. They come to me already on Ozempic or Mounjaro, hoping for a quick fix for weight loss or other health concerns.
But what if we had started with a more foundational approach? What if we had focused on optimizing their hormones first (remember, estrogen, testosterone, and thyroid hormones all play a role in metabolism, energy, and fat burning)? It's possible that we could have avoided the need for a GLP-1 altogether.
I'm not saying GLP-1s are bad or that they don't have a place in a comprehensive wellness plan. But I do believe that we need to be more thoughtful and nuanced in our approach to using them. We need to consider the whole picture – a person's diet, lifestyle, hormones, and individual needs.
And that's exactly what I do with my clients. We dig deep, we uncover the root causes of their health concerns, and we create a personalized plan that addresses those root causes, not just the symptoms. Sometimes, that plan might include medication by working with their primary care provider, but often, it doesn't.
